Our type of meditation (Mantra Yoga Meditation) was brought to the West by a sage named Swami Guru Devanand Saraswati Ji Maharaj. He founded the International Society of Divine Realization, and came from an ascetic order of the Shankaracharya in India. He studied for a considerable time in the Himalaya Mountains with a well-recognized sage named Mauna Swami, then studied with the Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math (1953-1980): Swami Shantanand Saraswati Ji Maharaj.

Swami Devanand taught yoga philosophy and Mantra Yoga Meditation through the International Society of Divine Realization. MYM, he explained, is the key to contacting one’s inner self, the fountain of energy, peace, and happiness. He also taught the following: “There won’t be peace on earth until a sense of peace is in the heart of every individual that makes up this world.”

Although several of our members have been practicing the technique for many years, Swami Guru Devanand Yoga Center has been open to the public in this location since 2000. We have been following the teachings of Swami Devanand while working with instructors from the International Society of Divine Realization, who are always open and willing to assist anyone in learning and beginning their own meditation. We also practice Hatha Yoga, the physical exercises that complement meditation– our classes are offered in both English and Spanish.
